Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: an analyst who visited Apple’s suppliers predicts that Apple is going to introduce an iPhone with a bigger screen and an iPad with a smaller screen. I know I have. This time around the rumor comes from analyst Brain White with Topeka Capital Markets, by way of Apple Insider.
Brain White claims that the new iPhone will feature a 4-inch display (up from 3.5 inches), LTE network connectivity (as with the iPad 3), and a sleek new design built around a unibody aluminum case. Massive sales sparked by a significant redesign is the reason White cites for his prediction that Apple’s stock will reach $1001. As for the “iPad mini,” the smaller tablet is claimed to be somewhere in development and not for imminent release.
The reason I am skeptical about claims about tweaked iPhone form factors is because Apple has been very strict about maintaining the current screen dimensions of its iOS devices. The latest iPad’s screen resolution is 2048 by 1536. This number looks awkward on paper, but it perfectly doubles the 1024 by 768 panels of the previous models. This allows for older apps to easily run on the new screens without needing updates. Tweaked form factors would mean fragmentation; apps would have to be specificialy designed to support both the new and older phones, as well as the smaller tablet.
If the same screen resolution was maintained but spread across a larger area, that would also cause problems as Apple’s carefully designed interface is built around a 3.5 inch screen. It doesn’t seem likely that Apple will release iOS devices with different form factors, but would size be a selling point to you? Share your views in the comments section below.
