New iMac!!

By Jaden Ellett, October 23, 2012
It was widely rumored that Apple would introduce the next-generation iMac at its special iPad Mini event today, and sure enough the fruit company did just this. What was unexpected however, was just how revolutionary the iMac update would be. Although we expected Apple to bump the specs of the iMac, it was not expected that we would see a serious update to the actual design of the iMac. But this is exactly what Apple did… they took what some people consider to be the flagship Mac product, and made it even more extraordinary.
Just how did they do this?
Well, they started by putting the iMac on a serious diet. Apple’s new iMac is just stunning 5mm thin (45% thinner than its predecessor) with edge-to-edge glass. The display is laminated to the display, and every display is individually calibrated using a spectral radiometer. It was joked on stage by Phil Schiller, “there’s an entire computer in there.”
The new iMac will come in two variants: the 27-inch version with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, and 21.5 inches with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Despite how thin the new iMac is, it has also had a bump in specs, but keep in mind there is no more optical drive. It will feature i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge processors, up to 3TB of storage and four USB 3.0 ports. Something notable it also includes is a brand new fusion drive that is essentially a cross between a solid state flash drive and a normal hard drive. It contains a 128GB flash drive with your choice of a 1 – 3 TB hard drive. The OS, frequently used applications and documents will be stored on the flash drive, while less used applications and documents will remain on the hard drive.
The new iMac lineup will start at $1,299 for the base version of 21.5-inch version with an i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. As for
the base model of the 27-inch version it will start at $1,799. You can learn more about the new iMac by visiting the official page on Apple’s website.

iOS 6 untethered update

Cyril, better known as Pod2G in the Jailbreaking community, shared some interesting information at JailbreakCon 2012 about his thoughts on the future Jailbreaking. Something surprising that he brought up is that he thought Jailbreaking had an expiry date. What he meant by this is that as Apple is making Jailbreaking harder and hard in every iteration of iOS, eventually there would be no injection vector and Jailbreaking would cease to exist.

One could definitely argue against this, and point to the fact that as iOS was made by humans, there always has to be some sort of injection vector. The problem is however, Jailbreaking iOS has become one of the hardest platforms to exploit to date. Pod2G said himself, that he is only aware of a handful of people throughout the world who actually have the knowledge and expertise to exploit iOS. As such he said unless the Jailbreaking community sees some more developers, it is just going to become something that eventually fades away.

We can already see the effect of not having enough developers in the Jailbreaking community starting to take effect with the iOS 6 and iPhone 5 Untethered Jailbreak.

A reliable source of information in the Jailbreaking community, @Veeence took to Twitter recently to share some information on the current state of the Jailbreak. Essentially he shared information we already knew, but he did help clarify some details (read from the bottom up).

The iOS 6 and iPhone 5 Untethered Jailbreak will likely take the longest to see the light of day because Apple has increased security measures and there aren’t as many people working on Jailbreaks as there once was. Hopefully with events like JailbreakCon and Jailbreak devs presenting at conferences like HITB, it will help attract new figures to the Jailbreaking community. Otherwise Jailbreaking could cease to exist, or at the minimum take much longer than it has in the past to add support for new firmwares.

New Wiggle Mode in Apple TV iOS 6 beta

Yesterday we told you the Apple TV running the iOS 6 beta 2 firmware contains ‘Wiggle Mode’. For those of you who are drawing a blank when hearing the term ‘Wiggle Mode’ it is when you re-arrange icons on your iOS device’s SpringBoard (homescreen) and the icons start to wiggle. As such, when we refer to ‘Wiggle Mode’ we mean the SpringBoard editor mode.
Anyways, back on track, this ‘Wiggle Mode’ for the Apple TV running iOS 6 beta 2 is enabled while holding down select button on your Apple TV remote control. Upon doing so the app you currently have selected will be automatically moved to a new position and the other applications will be rearranged automatically like on iOS. The only difference between ‘Wiggle Mode’ on the Apple TV versus say the iPhone is that only the selected app’s icon will start wiggling instead of all the applications starting to wiggle. Furthermore, there is no delete button on the icons (due to the fact that you cannot delete stock apps).
Check out a demo of ‘Wiggle Mode’ on the Apple TV running the iOS 6 beta 2 firmware below…
With ‘Wiggle Mode’ being featured in the Apple TV iOS 6 beta 2 firmware it could be a clear indication that 3rd party applications are coming to the Apple TV. In fact, this sort of functionality was introduced just before the iOS App Store was launched, giving this rumor even more credibility. I envision downloadable Apple TV applications to be similar to what Brightcove has been developing.
What better way to get around the Apple TV’s lack of an input device than use the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. In my opinion, most people who own an Apple TV most likely own an iOS device anyways, so relying on their iOS devices for an input device would be a smart idea.
What do you think? Will we see 3rd party apps coming to the Apple TV in the public release of the iOS 6 firmware for Apple TV? Share your responses and further thoughts in the comments section.

Get iOS 6 functionality on your iOS 5 device

The iOS 6 firmware generation will bring about a whole whack load of improvements to your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad when it is shipped to the public this Fall. In fact, we have given some hands-on demos of some of the new iOS 6 functionality such as the redesigned Maps.app, new iPad clock.app and even some of Siri’s new features.
Right now the only way for you to experience these new iOS 6 features is to be a registered Apple developer. If you do not want to spend the $99 required to become a registered Apple developer then you will be glad to know you have another option; as long as your iOS device is Jailbroken that is.
iOS 6 Theme Cydia Package
You see, recently a Winterboard theme was released into Cydia called iOS 6 Theme. Though this theme will not actually give you all of the functionality of iOS 6, it will mimic most of, if not all, the UI (user interface) changes in iOS 6 on your Retina iPhone or iPod Touch. The most notable examples being the redesigned iPhone dialler, new stock Music app skin and blue status bar.
Transform iOS 5 Into iOS 6
Another nice element to iOS 6 Theme is that it will add a non-functioning Passbook icon to your Springboard (homescreen) that simply adds to the overall effect of the theme. You of course will also find all of the new iOS 6 wallpapers available as well.
Obviously I understand these are all purely cosmetical changes, but what do you expect, it is a theme. For those of you who would like to add some of iOS 6′s functionality to your iPhone or iPod Touch you will be glad to know a few tweaks have been released to do just this.
  • iOS 6 Photos Menu: This Cydia tweak will bring the all new iOS 6 sharing menu to the stock Photos app. With iOS 5, you could only tweet a picture from the Photos app, but with iOS 6, you can post them on Facebook, Google+ etc.
  • iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification CenterThe iOS 6 firmware features a tap to tweet bar from the notification center that will allow you to quickly compose your a tweet. With the iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center you can replicate this same functionality.
  • FullScreen for Safari: Although this tweak was not specifically designed to bring iOS 6 functionality to devices running iOS 5, this golden tweak will still enable the full screen landscape browsing functionality that the iOS 6 version of Safari features (and some other cool features as well).
Hopefully these Cydia packages will get you by until the official release of the iOS 6 firmware this Fall. Let us know if you guys know of any other Cydia packages that replicate iOS 6 functionality in the comments section below…

Unlock all iPhones with SAM

Unlock any iPhone using SAM
A new unlock method has been discovered that works on every iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 3GS running iOS 5, iOS 5.0.1, and even iOS 5.1, the only requirement is the iPhone must be jailbroken already. If you’re already jailbroke go ahead, otherwise here are guides to jailbreak iOS 5.1 and another guide for the iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1.
  • Assuming your iPhone is jailbroken and ready to go…
  • Open Cydia and add the repo “repo.bingner.com” and then search for “SAM” by sbingner and install it
  • Tap on the orange SAMPrefs icon that looks like a SIM card to launch the app
  • Tap “Utilities” and select “De-Activate iPhone”, tap “OK” when the deactivation notification pops up
  • Now tap “Method” and tap on “By Country and Carrier”
  • Tap “Country” and select the country the iPhone is locked to
  • Tap “Carrier” and choose the origin carrier the iPhone is locked to
  • Tap “More Information” and tap the IMSI number found under “SAM Details”
  • Tap on “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”
  • Tap back to the primary SAM setting screen, and paste the IMSI number into IMSI
  • Connect the iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes, letting iTunes reactive the iPhone
  • Disconnect the iPhone from the computer and quit iTunes, then tap on “SAMPrefs” again and flip the “Enabled” switch so that SAM is disabled
  • Relaunch iTunes and connect the iPhone to the computer yet again, ignore the “failed to activate” message and quit and relaunch iTunes again
  • Wait a minute or two and the iPhone should get a signal from the new carrier, it’s now unlocked and activated
iPhone unlocked using T-Mobile as carrier
The downside to the SAM unlock method is that it requires a jailbreak, that means if you lose your the jailbreak you lose the unlock. If you don’t want to jailbreak or you can’t for some reason, you can officially unlock an iPhone from AT&T by phone or through AT&T via web chat instead. It can take several weeks for the unlock request to process with AT&T and the iPhone must be out of contract, but it doesn’t require any funky software mods and is much easier than the aforementioned SAM method.
Great find by Singularity and @musclenerd.
